Carmel Middle School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2002 and 2007. This recognition, one of the most prestigious education awards in the country, distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

The National Blue Ribbon distinction is awarded based on overall academic progress and meeting annual yearly progress qualifications set forth by No Child Left Behind Legislation.   Schools may not be recognized more than once during a five year period.

    • Recipient of the Indiana Four Star School Award
    • Nearly 170 scholar-athletes (3.67 or above)
    • Chris Hedge, seventh grade science teacher, received a Lilly Grant to research hummingbirds in Ecuador.
    • Matt Moller, eighth grade science teacher, received a Lilly Grant to research, document and develop a science and Civil War history web site
    • Chris Hedge, seventh grade science teacher, was accepted into the NOAA Research at Sea Program
    • Peggy Lehman, eighth grade social studies teacher, was selected to participate in the NEH Landmark workshop entitled, “Inventing America.”
    • Margaret Hollies, eighth grade language arts teacher, will present at the NMSA conference
    • Mark Matthews, social studies department chairman and eighth grade social studies teacher, was one of 15 scholars in the United States to attend a conference in Colorado entitled, “Two Competing Visions”
    • First middle school in the nation to hold a dance marathon and raised over $3,600
    • Over 400 students with perfect attendance
    • IMEA Non-Competitive Festival: Advanced Rating
    • 7th Grade String Orchestra:
    • ISSMA Organizational Contest: Gold Award with Distinction, Group II
    • 8th Grade Full Orchestra:
    • ISSMA Organizational Contest: Gold Award, Group 1
    • Music in the Parks: Middle School Full Orchestra AA, 1st Place, Superior Rating and Score
    • Music in the Parks: Overall Best Junior High/Middle School Orchestra
    • 7th Grade Choir:
    • Gold Award at ISSMA Organizational contest
    • 8th Grade Choir:
    • Gold Award at ISSMA Organizational contest
    • Excellent Rating and 2nd Place at Music In The Parks Chicago
    • Show Choir:
    • Grand Champion Middle School Show Choir Division at Ben Davis Giant Spectacular.
    • 6th Grade Choir
    • Participated in the IMEA Non-Competitive Festival
    • 8th Grade Symphonic Band
    • Gold rating with Distinction at ISSMA Organization Contest in March.
    • First Place in the Middle School Band division at the “Music in the Parks” festival in Chicago, IL.
