New Students

Carmel High School strives to help new students become comfortable and familiar with their new school. As a result, the activities office has developed a program designed to help freshmen transition into high school. Known as Greyhound Kick-off, this program is run entirely by upperclassmen (juniors and seniors). The freshmen are split up into their SRT classes and each class is led by a group of about 6 upperclassmen, known as GKOMS (Greyhound Kick-off Mentors).

Before the start of the school year, freshmen and GKOMS meet at the high school for the Greyhound Kick-off freshman orientation day. Throughout the day, freshmen are presented with a tour of the school, skits created by their mentors, welcoming speeches by administrators, and a variety of fun and hands-on activities designed to help them get to know each other and become familiar with the high school. Students are also encouraged to become involved in the school through joining clubs, sports, or other extra-curricular activities.

Throughout the school year, the GKOMS meet with their freshman class during SRT (about two times a month) to do an activity relating to relevant school events such as finals, homecoming, etc. The GKOMS are always available to answer any questions freshmen may have relating to their high school life or simply life in general. During the first week of school year, GKOMS can be seen wearing bright orange shirts, should any freshman need help finding their new classes or simply someone to talk to.
