AVID

AVID (ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION)
Beginning in the Fall of 2016, the nationally recognized AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program will be launching at Clay Middle School. AVID helps students learn organizational skills, critical-thinking skills, and study strategies while exploring colleges and careers.

AVID Exploratory Course – 6th grade only – 9 week elective
The AVID Exploratory Course is designed to highlight the major skills that students need to be successful in school. This class will expose students to the AVID basic strategies in the areas of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading that will assist students in becoming more confident in their abilities as well as assist in self-advocacy skills. The AVID Exploratory Course is a nine week elective course open to all 6th grade students.

AVID Elective Course – 7th grade and 8th grade – year long elective
AVID is offered as an elective course that prepares students for post-secondary experiences. Students taking this elective course receive the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in high school and post-secondary. Students will receive instruction in academic skills through participation in direct instruction, tutor-led study groups, and motivational
activities. AVID strategies focus on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support academic growth. In order to be involved in the AVID elective class, a student must participate in an application/interview process, have average grades, and have the desire to be successful in school.

The recruitment process begins for current 6th and 7th grade students in January of 2016. Students must complete an application and return it to their team leader by January 29, 2016.

The Clay Middle School AVID program is looking for students that:
-Consistently complete homework and class work
-Score well on standardized tests (NWEA) and have an average GPA
