These academic bowls allow students to compete with other academic teams at the local and state level. If you’d like to learn more about the academic bowls, find word lists, scientific concepts, and practice problems for each of the contests visit http://www.iasp.org/dsp/academic/.
Who Can Participate?
The academic bowls are open to all 4th and 5th grade students. Each academic bowl team competes at a different point in the year. Announcements regarding tryout dates will be made on CWE-TV News broadcasts, and included in the Cardinal Weekly News posted to the CWE website each Friday.
The 2018-19 competition dates for each academic bowl team are as follows:
Spell Bowl: Thursday, November 15th at 5:00 p.m. at Smoky Row Elementary
Science Bowl: Tuesday-Thursday, January 22nd-24th, during the school day at College Wood Elementary
M.A.T.H Bowl: Thursday, February 21st at 5:00 p.m. at West Clay Elementary
When Do the Academic Bowl Teams Meet?
The academic bowl teams will meet at various times of the year, depending upon their competition date. Those students who try out for and are invited to join the team will meet for practice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, before school, from 7:15-8:05 a.m. A detailed practice schedule will be provided for each team once they have been determined.
How Much Does It Cost?
There is no fee to join the team, however, if a student is selected to join a team they will have to purchase a team shirt to wear for the competition. The price for the shirt varies but generally falls within the price range of $10.00 to $15.00. The students will get to keep their shirts.
