Math Pentathlon

College Wood Elementary PTO is excited to offer the Math Pentathlon Club again this year. Math Pentathlon has been offered at College Wood Elementary in the past, in several different formats over the years. We have looked at what other Carmel Clay Schools do to make their Math Pentathlon clubs a success and redesigned ours to be an exciting opportunity for our College Wood Elementary students.

What is Math Pentathlon?

  • Math Pentathlon is full year club that will give College Wood Elementary Students the opportunity to learn and practice problem solving and strategy skills while playing games based on fundamental math principles in a fun & supportive setting. They will also work on sportsmanship and team building skills at our weekly practices while getting ready for the regional tournament.

What grade levels is this club for?

  • All grades, K-5 can participate! There are 3 divisions at the elementary level; each division plays their own games. Division I is Kindergarten & 1st grade, Division II is 2nd & 3rd grades, and Division III is 4th and 5th grades. There is a minimum of six and maximum of sixteen students for each division.

Does my child need to be “good at math” to enjoy this club?

  • No, this is an inclusive club! All the games will be taught step by step, and students with all levels of math ability can enjoy them. All skill levels are welcome!

When does Math Pentathlon meet?

  • Club is held bi-weekly on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00pm at College Wood Elementary. The club will run from October 4th through the end of tournament season in April.

Does my child really need to be at every meeting?

  • Yes! We understand that kids get sick, and things sometimes come up. With that said, if you can’t plan on being at every meeting, then please consider that Math Pentathlon may not be the right fit for you. The College Wood Elementary students who competed last year practiced weekly without losing interest. We’re confident that the students will have fun and be successful if they (and their families) commit to being an active member of the Math Pentathlon Team!

Can you tell me more about the tournament?

  • All students who participate in the club are submitted for the Indiana/Ohio Regional Tournament, held in Indianapolis in the spring. Our club collects the fees as part of registration then submits them to the tournament. We also register your child as part of the club signup. Tournament information can be found at the National Math Pentathlon website http://www.mathpentath.org. One parent volunteer must be present for every two children attending.

Does a parent have to volunteer?

  • We do need the help and support of all the parents. Math Pentathlon club is a great way to get involved with the school and your child. Many parents enjoy participating with their children and get to see them learn and grow with new skills & challenges. There are options for different volunteer opportunities through the online registration form. All volunteers need to have a criminal history check on file and have viewed the anti-bullying video. If you need to complete either of those, there is information in the registration link. Students whose parents agree to be a weekly volunteer for all the meetings will be placed on the club list above those whose parents do not. We will need a commitment of at least three shifts per family to run the divisions.

Can I be more involved?

  • Absolutely! We are looking for Division Head Coaches. Division Head Coaches will receive training by the Math Pentathlon Organization at no cost (PTO covers it).  The Head Coach will work with the Math Pentathlon Chair to help maintain communication and organization for their division.

How will I learn to the games that we facilitate during our volunteer shift?

  • The Math Pentathlon Organization will hold training at Smoky Row Elementary on September 29, 2016 from 6:30-9pm. It is highly encouraged that parents attend this training. Access the registration link HERE!

How do I register for the College Wood Elementary Math Pentathlon Club?

  • We are holding online registrations with the links being published September 7, 2016. Registration remain open until Friday, September 23, 2016. All fees and volunteer shifts must be committed by the close date otherwise your Pentathlete will be moved to the waitlist.

How do I sign up to volunteer?

  • Volunteer sign ups are on a “first come, first serve” basis and can be found in registration links to be published on September 7, 2016.

How do I know if my child has a spot in the club?

  • You will receive a confirmation email no later than Sunday, September 25, 2016 confirming your child has a spot in the Math Pentathlon Club or if they have been placed on the wait-list for their grade-level division. The maximum number of Pentathletes is 16 per Division.

How much does it cost?

  • The fee for the Math Pentathlon Club is $70, payable to the College Wood Elementary PTO through the registration link. This fee includes the student’s tournament fee ($40), and the balance is towards the club tshirt, the purchasing and upkeep of the games & activities we’ll use during practice, and our end of the year celebration.

When do I need to pay the club fee?

  • You will pay the fee through the Signup Genius registration process. Those who have not paid their fees by the end of the registration period will be wait-listed.

How do I get more information about the club?

  •  We will hold a parent meeting the September 6th, 2016 from 6:15-7:00pm at College Wood Elementary.

What if I’ve read all the information above and I still have questions?

  • You are welcome to contact our PTO Math Pentathlon Chair, Aimee Wiegmann at aimee@usa.net
