Beginning of Our Journey

Today was our big unveiling of our service project! We started the lesson out by watching the two clips attached to this webpage. They were both inspirational stories highlighting the importance of making a positive difference in the world. Our discussion after the videos was filled with lots of brainstorming and ideas. Students came up with a full list of groups and people that they wanted to help. After collaboration with their groups and whole class discussion, our class voted to put all of our efforts towards helping homeless families in Indiana. This would include children in orphanages and foster care. After choosing our cause, we received a phone call from the office. There was a special delivery for our classroom. Ms. Smith opened the boxed delivery and pulled out a blue shirt with our class's name on the front. Upon further examination, Ms. Smith realized that there were enough shirts for everyone! Shirts were flying through the air and landing in the hands of overly excited and enthusiastic change makers! The kids immediately put the shirts on, and we went outside for a class photo. As we were getting in position for the picture, the kids started chanting, "Be the change." It was a priceless moment for the kids and for us as teachers. The passion they feel for this project is very contagious and exciting to watch. Look for great things to come from this group!!! We will be wearing our shirts during all of our service projects. If you know that you would like to be a part of our efforts and would like to order a shirt, an order form will be sent home today.

Advertising

Students worked on researching the organizations and using that information to create brochures, flyers, and newsletter. In addition, they produced a commercial with the slogan... "Smell, then write. Yum, yum, yum, yum. Smell, then write. Yum, yum, yum, yum. It was quite the catchy tune!

Smencil Sales!!!

During the week of October 12-15, the students sold Smencils during lunch. By the last day of sales, we had sold out of every single Smencil, which was a total of 3,600 Smencils! Our profit was $2,015! Next week, the students will decide how to divide the money up between the Julian Center and School on Wheels. The kids explored some important economic principles and performed a very important civic duty...giving back to the community. Thank you to all of the parents who helped us each day!

School on Wheels Visit

On October 15th, several students and their parents visited the School on Wheels main site. After looking at the various resources like backpacks and supplies, uniforms, and other necessities, we were able to take a tour of one of the tutoring sites. We traveled to Dayspring Center to see the facilities and the tutoring program.

O Ambassadors' Video

This was a video that my class last year created in conjunction with our service project. We watched it this year to get the kids into the philanthropic mindset.

Deciding Our Recipient and Our Projects

October 1st- Below you will find pictures of us working with our researching partner. After reading about the Julian Center and School on Wheels, the kids wrote reasons we should help each organization and how we could help them. Be sure to look at their reasons on the chart! The kids voted that our first project will be to sell Smencils as a fundraiser. Let the work begin...
