Welcome to Miss Hayes's second grade classroom's web page. Here is what your child will be learning the week of September 26 - 30.
Reading: This week the children will be reading Horrible Harry Goes to the Moon. Harry finds an ad for a telescope. The children are studying the moon, and having a telescope would be perfect. They decide to have a bake sale to raise the money to buy the telescope. They plan a moonwatch event and invite their parents. Harry has a surprise planned for the big night. The children will be working on a variety of reading strategies this week.
Spelling: switch, stretch, thump, which, sandwich, scratch, bathtub, whips, it's, she's, know, other, wait, warm, without, world, year, yellow, full moon, waxing
Grammar: This week the children will be introduced to the verbs am, is and are. Am, is and are tell what someone or something is or is like. They will also be introduced to the verbs was and were. They tell about someone or something in the past. They will be introduced to has, have, and had. They tell about what someone or something owns or possesses.
Writing: We will wrap-up Lucy Calkins Unit 1: Improving Narrative Writing. This week the children will write their story and present it to the class.
Science- Children will learn facts about the moon.
Math: We will wrap-up Unit 2: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers. The review packet it due on Monday, September 26. The test over unit 2 will be on Tuesday, September 27. The children will begin Unit 3: Linear Measures and Area. They will discuss a need for a standard unit of measure and measure line segments to the nearest inch and I/2 inch. If your child has Mrs. Malan/Hill or Miss Shaffner for math, please refer to their websites for current math information.
Happenings: Go College Week! Monday wear favorite college gear, Tuesday dress for success, Wednesday wear your favorite college hat, Thursday wear pajamas or slippers, and Friday wear blue and gold (Carmel colors). On Wednesday, September 28 Mrs. Yoder will be presenting a program that is aimed at helping our students discover more about who they are and who they want to be through an activity that promotes higher education.
