I am a 1992 graduate of Indiana University with a B.S. in secondary English and journalism education. I've worked in the Carmel school district for a long time, in many different roles. I started as a student teacher at CHS in 1992 and then as an English teacher and Adviser of the HiLite student newspaper there. For the past 9 years, I've worked here at Carmel Middle School -- as the journalism teacher, and 7th & 8th grade Language Arts teacher.
I'm currently a student myself, completing an MBA in Education Leadership from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. I also serve as the English Department Chairperson.
I love to read -- especially lots of YA Literature. Lately, I've been re-reading the Harry Potter series. What a wonderful character! I've also read several of the John Green books: The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and Looking for Alaska.
I've recently started competing in obstacle course races. I've completed a Spartan Sprint, as well as several Warrior Dash elite competitions. In September, I finished in the Top 25 at a race in Michigan, and qualified for the World Championships in October. I'll also compete in several 5ks this year. I hope to do the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon.
I'm an advocate of good food, grown locally and eaten seasonally. I love to work in our garden. This year we've grown green beans, peas, collards, corn, cukes, squash, onions and of course, tomatoes! My husband is a beekeeper and this year we've harvested well over 100 pounds of honey!
I have 3 children. Megan is taking a "Gap Year" and travelling to visit family and friends around the country. Grant is a junior at Carmel High School and works hard as a Marching Greyhound. Will is a freshman this year and loves to play the upright bass in both Orchestra and Jazz Band.
As a family, we really enjoy any kind of water sport (sailing, paddle boarding, windsurfing, kayaking, skiing, and swimming). We also love the woods, and especially our family's log cabin built in 1818. We ride dirt bikes, fish, camp, and hunt on 325 acres in Putnam County. It's a very special place for us.
My husband and I serve together on the Board of Directors for a local organization called Straight Up. This ministry serves at-risk youth in Indianapolis, providing mentorship, tutoring, life coaching, sports and camp opportunities.
