Make Connections: Connect what you read to what you already know. This could be a real life experience, something you read in a book, something you saw in a movie, etc.
Ask Questions: Ask questions as you read to help you understand the story better.
Create Images: Make a movie in your mind! Think about what you would see, hear, taste, smell, feel, and touch if the book came to life!
Determine Importance: Is the idea important or interesting but not important? If the event is changed in the book and it affects how the rest of the story goes than it is probably important!
Infer: Using what you know to help you form new ideas about a story.
Synthesize: Bring different ideas together to make a new idea!
Monitor Understanding: Check to make sure you are understanding what you read.
Use Fix-Up Strategies: Use strategies to help you figure out a word: sound it out, switch the vowel, chunk it, use picture clues, etc.
