Advanced Placement European History is an academic year-long course that is meant to be the equivalent of a freshman college course and can earn students college credit if they pass the AP exam. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of basic chronology and of major events and trends from approximately 1450 to the present, that is, from the High Renaissance to the very recent past. In addition, students must be able to examine primary source historical documents and construct a cohesive essay that displays mastery of critical thinking skills. Students are expected to do a considerable amount of reading in both the major text and the supplementary sources. All reading assignments, quizzes, tests, and written assignments are designed to prepare students for college level work and the AP exam.
